Doosan Clinches Large-Scale Project to Supply Equipment for Goseong Hai Thermal Plant

- Doosan establishes unrivaled position in Korean 1000MW-class thermal plant market with successive achievements - Company aims to make inroads into overseas markets including Southeast Asia by banking on track record in Korea
  • □ Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Chairman & CEO Geewon Park) announced on December 7 that it has acquired a US$596 million contract to supply the main equipment, including boilers and turbines for Goseong Hai thermal power plant units 1 and 2.
  • □ Given its preferred bidder position among global companies, including MHPS and Toshiba, in an open international bid conducted last year, Doosan ultimately received the Notice to Proceed from the project host, SK Engineering & Construction, on December 4.
  • □ This is Doosan’s fourth 1000MW-class thermal power project in Korea since its first project to supply the main equipment (boilers and turbines) for the 1000MW-class Shin Boryeong thermal power plant in 2013, followed by the Gangneung Anin thermal power project in March of this year, and the Shin Seocheon thermal power project this November 27. The company was also selected as the preferred bidder to supply the main equipment for the 1000MW-class Samcheok thermal power plant this November.
  • □ The 2000MW-class Goseong Hai thermal power plant (1,000 MW X 2 units) will be built in Hai-myeon, Goseong County, South Gyeongsang Province, with units 1 and 2 scheduled for completion in October 2020 and April 2021 respectively. Capable of generating power output equivalent to that of a nuclear plant, the ultra super critical (USC) power plant will also boast high energy efficiency.
  • □ An official at Doosan said, “Doosan has achieved unrivaled leadership in the Korean market for 1000MW-class thermal power plant projects,” adding, “We now aim to extend our commitment to serve our customers overseas, by banking on the strength of our advanced solutions and proven experience in Korea.”
  • □ As a state-funded project, Doosan has been developing USC technologies for power plants. Compared to conventional thermal power plants, USC plants can operate at higher steam pressure (250 bar or higher) and higher steam temperature (600 degrees Celsius or higher), thereby reducing fuel consumption and enhancing energy efficiency.
  • □ USC technology development also features among the new industry development projects announced recently by the Korean government.
