Doosan Enerbility Enters into Contract with Agency for Defense Development on Aircraft Engine Testing

Doosan Enerbility announced on January 15th that it had signed an agreement with the Agency for Defense Development regarding the “Combustor and Test Rig Manufacturing” project. With the signing of this agreement, Doosan Enerbility will be assisting the agency on the development of a prototype and rig* testing of a high-temperature combustor. The project is slated to be carried out until April 2027.* Test Rig: a prototype testing device or structure developed to test and verify the stable performance of engine components As the combustors of aircraft engines are required to undergo numerous rig testings during the development process, the manufacturing and testing typically take place before the development of the engine system. Through this project, the agency and Doosan will be jointly developing an optimal combustor, one that is verified for its outstanding performance and reliability. This will be followed by a series of combustor rig tests, which are to take place using various aircraft operation scenarios. Doosan plans to apply its advanced hot parts technology, which was steadily built up over the years through numerous power plant gas turbine projects, to the manufacturing of the combustor prototype. Doosan’s additive manufacturing(AM) technology will be applied foremost to respond swiftly and accurately to the customers’ various demands and design variables. Moreover, Doosan will also be leveraging its thermal barrier coating(TBC)* technology, which was accumulated from its experience of handling power plant gas turbines, as well as its test rig design and manufacturing expertise.* TBC (Thermal Barrier Coating : technology that involves applying a layer of fireproof coating onto the interior walls of the combustion chamber to protect the combustor from high-temperature flames Doosan Enerbility is currently carrying out the “Engine Layout Design and Analysis Service,” which is regarded as a prerequisite for this project. Doosan is also working on construction work aimed at improving the testing facilities at the agency’s test site where the combustor testing is to take place. Alignment of these projects is expected to lead to improved results for the aircraft engine development. “This recent project win shows that Doosan Enerbility is recognized for its competitiveness in the field of aircraft engine combustor manufacturing and testing as well,” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group. “By leveraging our advanced manufacturing technology and testing capabilities, which we acquired through participation in numerous power plant gas turbine development work over the years, we aim to contribute to the development of aircraft gas turbines.”
