Doosan Enerbility Signs Precision-Guided Munitions Development MOU with LIG D&A
Doosan Enerbility announced on October 20 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) on the development of the engine for precision-guided munitions*.* Precision-Guided Munition (PGM): a smart weapon that is equipped with an advanced sensor and control system to steer itself toward a designated strike target.
The MOU signing ceremony, which was held at Bundang Doosan Tower that day, was attended by the related parties from both companies, including Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group and Taesik Park, Head of LIG D&A’s Missile Systems Business Division. With the signing of the MOU, the two companies will be cooperating on securing local manufacturing capabilities for next-generation PGM engines, acquiring technological sovereignty for South Korea’s defense industry and enhancing South Korea’s global competitiveness in this field.
LIG D&A will be handling development of the precision-guided munitions system, while Doosan Enerbility will be taking on development of the engine to be deployed in the system. The two companies agreed to cooperate closely on the overall process from development of the PGM engine to the testing, evaluation and certification.
As the global defense market has recently seen a rapid rise in the demand for long-range precision fires, the securing of high-performance engines has become a key competitive factor. The plan is to embark on development of the future defense market by leveraging the two companies’ accumulated strengths in the areas of precision-guided munitions and aircraft engines. Succeeding in the local manufacturing of the engines in particular is expected to help lower the reliance on foreign technology and resolve the issue of export constraints.
“This MOU holds great significance as it shows we have established a long-term cooperation framework with LIG D&A, Korea’s leading company in the area of precision-guided munitions development,” said Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group. “By combining the key technologies held by both companies, we aim to contribute to the development of globally competitive K-defense technology at home.”
