KEPCO E&C and Doosan Sign Agreement on Nuclear Decommissioning Technology Cooperation

- Two companies set to establish joint R&D system to secure technological independence in nuclear decommissioning field - To enter domestic and overseas nuclear decommissioning markets through synergies from cooperation between companies specializing in nuclear technology
  • □ Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (Chairman & CEO Geewon Park) announced on November 12 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KEPCO E&C for cooperation in the development of nuclear decommissioning technology, and entry into the domestic and overseas nuclear decommissioning markets.
  • □ At the signing ceremony, which was attended by Jik-lae Jo, head of KEPCO E&C’s nuclear division, and Habang Kim, CEO of Doosan’s Nuclear BG, the two companies agreed to establish a joint R&D system aimed at securing technological independence in the nuclear decommissioning field, and to strengthen cooperation.
  • □ Since 2000, KEPCO E&C has been spearheading the development of nuclear power plant decommissioning technologies with its R&D organization. The company signed a contract for technology transfer with E.ON of Germany, which possesses experience in nuclear power plant decommissioning, last July.
  • □ As one of the country’s leading nuclear power plant equipment manufacturers, Doosan is concerting its efforts to develop advanced decommissioning technologies for Gori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, which is due to be dismantled after its permanent suspension in 2017. To that end, the company signed a cooperation agreement with Siempelkamp of Germany, which specializes in the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, last September.
  • □ Habang Kim, CEO of Doosan’s Nuclear BG, said, “The agreement is significant in that it will build cooperation between two companies that are currently leading the design and manufacturing of nuclear equipment” adding, “By capitalizing on the expected synergies, Doosan will not only be better equipped to carry out domestic nuclear decommissioning projects including Gori Nuclear Plant Unit 1, but will also be better placed to serve its customers overseas.”
