- Feeder pipes to be manufactured and supplied for Cernavoda Unit 1 as part of refurbishment project aimed at plant lifetime extension
- Fifth feeder pipe contract to be won after contract wins in China and Canada, achieved via multilateral support from government and KHNP for nuclear exports

On May 2nd, Doosan Enerbility announced that it had signed a contract with Canada’s Candu Energy to manufacture and supply feeder pipes for the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 in Romania. This marks the fifth feeder pipe contract to be won following after the supplier contracts won for power plants in China and Canada.

The feeder pipe, a key component of pressurized heavy-water reactors(PHWR)*, performs the function of carrying the coolant which is required to control the temperature of the reactor. With the signing of this contract, Doosan Enerbility will be supplying a total of 1,520 feeder pipes to Candu Energy by 2027.

* A nuclear reactor that uses heavy water(D2O) as its coolant. In Korea, Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Units 2, 3 and 4 fall under this category. The heavy water is composed of deuterium (the hydrogen isotope which has a mass double that of ordinary hydrogen) and oxygen. The molecular weight is greater than that of average water.

The Cernavoda Unit 1, which is a Canada-designed pressurized heavy water reactor model, has an operating license that is set to expire in 2026. To renew the license for an additional 30 years, plans are in place to pursue refurbishment of the plant. Doosan’s feeder pipes will be used in this refurbishment project. Moreover, the consortium formed by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Candu Energy and Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare is also seeking to win the contract for Phase 3 of the refurbishment project.

”This recent win was the result of our successful track record in delivering feeder pipes to nuclear power plants in China and Canada and owing to the multilateral support received from the government and KHNP on nuclear exports,” said Jongdoo Kim, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group. “We will do our utmost to contribute to the export of Korean nuclear reactors by achieving complete quality assurance on this project as well.”

Doosan Enerbility has been continuously engaged in nuclear power projects over the years, such as  the KRW 1.6 trillion contract won in 2022 for construction of the turbine island at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, the supplier contract won in 2021 for the Man-Machine Interface System(MMIS) components of the Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4 and Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant Units 7 & 8, and the feeder pipe supplier contract won for four PHWR nuclear power plants (Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 & 2 - Phase 3 in China, Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station and Bruce Nuclear Generating Station Unit 6 in Canada).
