Doosan Enerbility announced on June 4th that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea South-East Power Co. on promoting the growth of next-generation, eco-friendly 100% hydrogen-fueled turbines that were developed using homegrown technology.

The signing ceremony which was held at Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon headquarters on June 4th was attended by key figures from both parties, including Kiyoon Kang, President of KOEN, and Yeonin Jung, Vice Chairman and COO of Doosan Enerbility. The MOU, which was devised to support the South Korean government’s policy of achieving carbon neutrality and promoting a hydrogen economy, aims at creating an ecosystem for clean hydrogen in order to expand carbon-free energy sources.

Upon signing the MOU, KOEN agreed to cooperate on the pursuit and operation of 100% hydrogen-fueled clean energy projects. Doosan Enerbility’s role will be to develop competitive 100% hydrogen-fueled turbines using the latest technology and supply the required equipment.

KOEN has long been Doosan’s partner as it has been participating in the national project being led by Doosan for developing 100% hydrogen-fueled mid-size turbines since the initial planning stage, and is paving the way to the demonstration and commercialization of locally developed hydrogen turbines. Furthermore, in an effort to achieve carbon neutrality and promote the Gyeongnam region’s economy, the company is also reviewing plans to supply carbon-free energy by deploying hydrogen turbines at existing coal-fired power plant sites.

“The 100% hydrogen-fueled turbine sector is gaining momentum in Korea owing to the growing practical demand being shown by the local power companies,” said Doosan Enerbility’s COO Yeonin Jung.  “With KOEN participating from early on in hydrogen power projects at this time when global gas turbine manufacturers are stepping up their hydrogen turbine development efforts, this will help drive the Korean-standard hydrogen turbines’ entry into the global market.”

In the meantime, Doosan Enerbility has plans to complete development of mid and large-sized 100% hydrogen-fueled turbines with 90MW and 400MW capacity by 2028.  Upon affirming their partnership this time, the two companies agreed to continuously cooperate on building an ecosystem for clean hydrogen energy, and to also join forces on facilitating the entry of Korean-standard hydrogen turbines into the global market. ▲ KOEN President Kiyoon Kang (on the left) and Doosan Enerbility Vice Chairman & COO Yeonin Jung pose for a photo at the signing ceremony for the “MOU on Promoting Growth of Homegrown Next Generation, Eco-Friendly 100% Hydrogen-Fueled Turbines” which was held at Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon headquarters on June 4.▲ KOEN President Kiyoon Kang (on the left) and Doosan Enerbility Vice Chairman & COO Yeonin Jung pose for a photo at the signing ceremony for the “MOU on Promoting Growth of Homegrown Next Generation, Eco-Friendly 100% Hydrogen-Fueled Turbines” which was held at Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon headquarters on June 4.
